I have thought about elements of this often. How would I maintain my new friendships without the web? How would the local friendships grow without the time I spend on the web? How do I use the web for local and distant friends in ways that supplement other communication media?

And I don't have the answers to those questions. But they are very challenging.

And you are right, friend. We would not have crossed paths, unless you stalled while driving past Fort Wayne and we were at the gas station or something. And I would be the lesser.

You were probably the first person I met face to face from Twitter. I remember being so nervous. I was thinking about you today and how I feel that I know you when in fact we have really only met that one time.. I remember being impressed that such a great person lived here in my city and was doing such wonderful things with her life..impacting her community. I am thrilled to have lived through the experience of the social web.

I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you yet in person, Suze but I do find that my life has been changed completely by social media. I have met people I would never have met in person, forged many relationships that have now had real life encounters, hired people I know through Twitter and their blogs and bought services on the basis of how I know them online. If it would end tomorrow, I would still have many friendships that would carry on forever somehow.

You and I live in the same town and although the tools allowed our paths to cross, those are irrelevant now. If this all went away tomorrow, we get to bring our skills with us and find a way to connect. Is it difficult for most people to meet others, perhaps, but the one-way conversation genie left with the bottle. Find your voice, find your ears, find your collaborators.

And we need to abolish the word "marketing" but that's for another discussion.
