I like the list making, but I use two - one is the lists of small tasks that I need to do (I use RTM for this), but I found it was easy to get into the trap of achieving tons of small things but nothing big. Then I started making a list of high-level goals for the week - every day one of these should be my big goal for the day. It keeps me focused on the important things I need to do - so effective, rather than productive.

Great post!

Reading this gets me overwhelmed as I recognize the patterns. I sink in the clutter.

I find prioritizing the work is really helpful. I don't always use a formal method, but prioritizing a list of items by urgency and importance (like http://www.lifetrainingonline.com/images/time_management_matrix.jpg) really allows me to focus on the things that need to get done now.

Cranking off the urgent items on the list really helps me mellow out and deal with the other items that are not in that critical + urgent bucket.
