I feel for you, Sue. This will be the third Christmas in a row that I won't be spending with my parents, brother (and his family) and sister.

It was really hard for the first year and it really doesn't get easier but I was lucky in that the first Christmas I spent away from my family was the first one I spent with my new family. My wife and I got to be with her mom, sister and grandfather and the love and support I got from them made being away from loved ones that much easier.

This year, though, will be the first that my wife and I spend alone. She's going west to see her family for a few days between Christmas and New Year's but I'll be home with the dog. It will be hard, I'm sure, but I am also lucky to live in the era of phones, emails, Skype and IM. It makes the miles seem somehow smaller.

Oh and what little town near Winnipeg? My maternal grandfather grew up in Ste-Rose - Manitoba French Canadians FTW!
